Description: | Inscribed funerary stele. Nearly intact stele broken off at bottom left. Front and right side heavily water worn and stained in places. Upper part carved in low relief: male figure stands at left, facing right wearing himation draped around shoulders under his right arm and over his left. He looks down at small scale standing female figure, facing left, whose right hand he shakes. She wears chiton and himation draped around shoulders and over her left arm, bent at waist. The details of faces and drapery are much effaced by water wear. Edges of relief panel carved to resemble pilasters. Top and left side of stele worked smooth, back rough. Two lines of the inscription preserved below relief. Pentelic marble. | |
Context: | Found built into west wall of the Great Drain. Reused as corner slab against temenos wall of the Royal Stoa. | |
