Title:   Oinochoe with Paint Decoration
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Mended from many pieces; considerable fragments of wall missing.
Around the neck of the pot a broad white fillet with a hanging rounded end at each side and a shorter end, above, extending nearly to the rim of the pot. In the panel formed by the hanging ends, two nude bearded male figures running right. They carry between them a large white object, apparently a fillet, wrapped around a stick which rests on their left shoulders, the stick steadied by each with his left hand. A long end of this fillet falls across the body of the first figure. White covering the shoulder and arm of the second figure and a trace of white on his upper left arm, suggests that the other end of the fillet also in part covered his body, but the condition of the surface makes certainty impossible. The first figure wears a double fillet(?) and is barefoot; the second figure wears a white cap and soft black boots. Both figures are drawn in a brown matte paint, and the flesh surfaces filled in with pink. They were apparently drawn in completely and the colored accessories added afterwards, as can be seen where either white (chest of first figure) or black (left boot of second figure) has flaked away, and the outlines of the figure appear beneath. Three large green leaves, the veins naturalistically rendered, hang down into the field from the white fillet and the neck. Caricatures (or mask?); huge noses and lips.
For shape and fabric cf. P 23900 (Τ 2840).
