Title:   Black Glaze Krater with Applied Decoration and Rouletting: Stamped
ΤΙΤΛΟΣ:   Μελαμβαφής κρατήρας με επίθετη ανάγλυφη διακόσμηση από εννέα μορφές του Διονυσιακού κύκλου 150 - 100 π.Χ.
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Mended from many pieces; the profile complete; most of the rim missing; also one handle and large fragments from the body. Restored in plaster. Heavy moulded conical foot; shallow wheel-run grooves on the body; on the shoulder, large ovolos below rouletting. Grooved horizontal handles with leaf-like projections and lions' head ornaments at lower attachments. High plain rim, flaring at the top, a wheel-run groove along the inner edge. On the rim, moulded decoration of nine figures or groups of figures in high relief, made separately, and applied to the vase before glazing. Several show a sharp edge, and other evidence that they were cut out from some continuous pattern. Here each figure, or group is separated from the next by ca. 0.025m.
Left to right, beginning with the figure above the preserved handle:
1. Bearded figure (giant?) hurling rock, right. Behind him, drapery. To the right, included in the appliqued piece, part of the upraised arms of an assailant.
2. Nude male figure, left, carrying torch (or flail?) over l. shoulder.
3. Nude figure right, arms upraised; a sack(?) over his shoulder.
4. Female figure, draped and veiled, standing left, with long torch in right hand.
5. Maenad in swirling drapery, dancing left, a kid swinging from her left hand. To the right, below, the foot of another figure, otherwise not included by the maker of the applique.
6. Standing female figure, draped and veiled, looking left, a tall torch in her left hand. Uncertain object to the left. A patera(?) in her r. hand.
7. Dionysos and Ariadne(?). Long-haired male figure, nude save for drapery over knees, facing, his left arm supported by a draped female figure, left. His feet, her figure below the knees and all the left side of the applique, missing.
8. Nude satyr left, playing pipes(?). A panther's skin hangs from his shoulders. In front, hand and arm of another figure.
9. Nude standing figure with torch, missing above waist.
Fine gray clay, dull silvery black glaze inside and out.
