Title: | Red Figure Cup | |
Category: | Pottery | |
Description: | Mended from several fragments: almost complete except for sections of rim and chips from bowl. Torus foot, rising underneath, continuous curve to body outside. Broad, shallow bowl, plain lip. Curving, canted horseshoe handles. Reserved: deep interior of bottom, resting surface and outer face of foot, line halfway up body, inside and outside lip, within handles, and circle within forming tondo. Red-figured design outside and inside. Hasty style, and proportions of figures almost cartoon-like. Inside: a youth, nude except for a cloak draped over the left arm and shoulder, moves right, holding a long crooked stick or staff in his right hand. Outside: tendrils coiled beneath handles lead to 5- or 6-leaved palmettes which frame scenes of youths-unarmed except for shields, in combat. On one side a nude youth holding a shield decorated with a dot rosette, advances to the right, his right hand held low as though grasping a spear. To his right, a second youth seen in rear view retreats to the right, holding a shield decorated with a feline (panther?) and wearing a cloth of some sort from waist to just above knees. His right hand, too, is bent and held low. On the other side a nude youth, holding an undecorated shield and his right arm held high, advances to right, toward a second youth seen in three-quarter frontal view who is retreating right, holding a shield decorated with an animal, apparently a horse, possibly intended to be a panther. Second youth is also nude and also holds his right arm high, as though grasping a spear. Good black glaze, Attic clay. Cf. Agora XII, no. 432, 500-480 B.C. | |
