Title:   Amphora Fragment with Paint Decoration

Description:   Fragment from neck, mended from two pieces. The neck curves outward toward shoulder and rim; at the lip, a heavy band.
An octopus painted in cream over black to red glaze; pattern broken away at left; most of the body of the octopus, with one tenacle, and parts of two others, remain.
Coarse pink clay with bits. Inside, cream slip with a band of glaze near the top.
A most unusual piece; cf. P 1731, which shows a common shape at this period. Light on Dark style, probably to be dated in the 1st half of 7th c. B.C.
ADDENDA Large joining fragments with part of the octopus found on 19 March 1935, in Section B (38-40/Η-Ζ), in sand fill under the road. H. as joined, ca. 0.13; greatest chord, at shoulder, ca. 0.195m.
