Title:   Herm Head Fragment
Category:   Sculpture
Description:   Preserves the mouth, the beard (save tip), the cheek with a little of the hair and traces of front part of ears, the front upper part of neck with a little of the hair or mantle on either side.
The condition of the upper part of the fragment suggests that the head may have been made in two pieces or mended in antiquity. Above the mouth is a fairly symmetrical, carefully smoothed area as for a join, let in from the top of the fragment is a rectangular hole with drill marks at the bottom, the front and part of the back wall of which has broken away. The top itself has been smoothed with a rasp or tooth chisel in a rapid curve down the back; the bottom has been broken away.
The shape of the bearded chin is like that or the Aegina heads; the lower lip is bared under drooping mustache; the beard in rendered by shallow, horizontal grooves.
Pentelic marble.
