Title: | Relief with Asklepios and Hygeia
Category: | Sculpture | |
Description: | Lower left corner missing. Asklepios and Hygeia stand side by side within naiskos, facing out. Asklepios is on the left, leaning on a staff, which rests under his right arm. His right hand and wrist were either repaired or added in a separate piece of marble halfway up the forearm where the surface is cut smooth across and there is a hole for a small dowel. Traces of a snake coiling up the staff can be made out. Hygeia stands to the right, her left arm held at her side; her right hand is held up, resting against an indistinct support, perhaps a tree, near Asklepios' head. To Hygeia's left is the anta of the naiskos; above their heads runs an epistyle and stylized roof; to the right of Asklepios the piece has been cut smooth and in the back surface there is half of a clamp hole. Another piece joined here, either continuing the same plane or perhaps at right angles to this piece. Back rough-picked. Surface of front worn, though in places (Hygeia's face) remarkably fresh. Crystalline white marble. Cf. S 2249 (Σ 3023) and S 2181 (ΠΑ 600).
