Title: | Relief Fragment Recut as Statue Support
Category: | Sculpture | |
Description: | Broken on sides, top and bottom. Fragment of relief depicting head of woman in profile, turned left and slightly downward. A small part of the background, to which the face is attached, is preserved, with a shallow groove (drill channel) cut between face and background. Woman has well modeled cheeks and deep set eyes. Top of head worn. Style and inclination of head suggest that this is part of a funerary stele. Second use: stele broken all around head, turned over and on side, so that woman's left cheek became the top surface; piece recut as support for statue. Part of tree-trunk is rendered, with a bunch of grapes hanging along it. In second use, piece was made for practice only, or left unfinished. White marble.
