Title: | Akanthos Stele | |
Category: | Sculpture | |
Description: | Stele complete as far as can be seen. Back rough-picked. Front surface uneven, possibly reworked with original surface chipped off. Flaked and spalled. Traces of mortar. A taenia over an ovolo separates the anthemion from the shaft. The anthemion is a split palmette composed of two five-leaved half-palmettes, which spring, along with their volutes, from thick cauliculae. Originally a second pair of volutes rested on the horizontal molding at the corners, but these are abraded away. The stems from which they grew are preserved. Fine grained white marble. | |
