Notes: | April 17 (p. 12-13) I began excavation of grid area 88-100/ΝΓ-ΠΗ, section G on plan #217, using 1-4 workmen, with notebook #231 for finds and notebook #223 for coins. Levelling points have been established as follows: A on wooden post at Ο-ΟΑ/118 +88.659; B on wooden post at ΠΕ/118, +88.659; C on wooden post at ΠΘ/131 +88.659; D on wooden post at ΠΘ/100 +85.194; E on westernmost block of beam course, S wall of inner rectangle of S. Basilica +84.812; T-1 ΡΕ/113 +87.844; T-3 ΟΓ/113 +87.505; T-8 ΟΔ/94 +87.160. I began clearing the modern surface of a small triangular area at Π-ΠΕ/96-100, the surface lying at a level of approx. +86.894. [Finds stamp.] In this fill, disturbed by plowing and containing both Byzantine and Modern sherds, 4 walls were discovered. Wall #1 lies at ΠΑ-ΠΓ/96-100, running NNE-SSW, with its highest level at +86.464. Wall #1 varies in width from .60 to .49. There was no change in the character of the fill, although fallen stones and broken tile appeared in the immediate proximity of Wall #1. Wall #2 lies at ΠΓ/100-98 [AG-added in pencil: ?ΠΓ?], running N-S at a level of +86.674. Most of the upper exposed surface is a mortar bed, but stones are apparently in situ above at Π/99 [AG-added in pencil: ?]. Wall #3 lies at 101-102/ΠΗ-ΠΓ, running E-W from the E face of Wall #1 [AG-the coordinates sound strange, judging from the information given about the other walls and the sketch on p. 18.]. Its level +86.424. Wall #4 lies at the edge of the N scarp at Π-ΠΓ/98-99, at a level of +86.589, joining the W face of Wall #1 to form a 90° angle. | |
