Notes: | April 17 (p. 14) I also began investigation of a small well whose center lies at Ρ-ΡΑ/99. The level of the upper surface of the highest preserved stone on the E is +84.424. The diameter at this level is .55 [AG-added in black pen: = Well 61-8, Deposit Index] [AG-no Basket # given, so apparently no substantial work was done here at this time.] April 19 (p. 23-25) Excavation of the small well at Ρ-ΡΑ/99 was continued. The diameter of the shaft is 0.55 at the top; it is narrowed at +83.124 by a rectangular stone beam laid across the east side of the shaft and bonded into the masonry at the north, south, and east. The diameter at +81.924 is 0.95-1.00. The shaft was cleared of fallen marble blocks and paving stones (probably from the Kenchreai road) from level +82.924 to +81.924, where the earth fill begins. The shaft is built of stone down to level +82.274, from which level it is cut through clay. Basket #5 was used for finds from this well. [Finds stamp.] A bone needle was found in this fill. At level +80.974, we found the fragments of a large Byzantine pot. Since this apparently marked the beginning of the use-fill, we changed to Basket #7. | |
