Notes: | Michali Fortis is on hand to show us graves. Niko and Michali begin sounding with trevelli to west of P. [James-Nakassis: trivello is Italian for a borer or brace] By noon two places had been found where there seemed to be fair sized slabs some distance underground. We began to dig at these two points. T is ca. 35.00 m W of P near the N edge of bluff. It soon became clear that there can be no Greek grave here. There is a good deal of Mycenaean pottery. At 0.70 deep I notice a couple of sherds of Mattmalerei and one or two of Minyan. ... At 4:00 PM I called the men off T and W. In T there seems to be regular stratification and there is no sign that the earth has been disturbed for a Greek grave. At 0.75-0.80 is top of a wall or rather two almost parallel walls running E and W. After 0.75 there is scarcely any Mycenaean pottery. Several matt [p. 256] malerei sherds. Ca. 0.70-0.75 Niko found upper part of Mycen. figurine with birdlike face. [NB 81 p. x] T III 0.75-0.90 Mycenaean LM III painted 2 sherds Plain buff, red buff, yellow buff, yellow green 15 sherds Coarse nondescript etc. 8 sherds Mattmalerei (a) black on green, green buff or buff 7 sherds (b) black on red 1 sherd (c) purple black on buff 2 sherds Urfirnis (a) wash 1 sherd (b) patterned black on yellow buff 1 sherd lustrous | |
