Notes: | In section L we have found a floor level at 0.35 below ground. Above this level we found numerous fragments of a large pithos. The floor itself is made of whitish clay. At one point is a small pavement of small stones and just east of it the earth is somewhat hardened and blackened by fire. This may be a hearth. We are extending L to S.E. in hopes of finding walls of house to which this floor belongs. [p. 352] L II 0.20-0.40 Mycenaean LM III large number of sherds mostly painted. Some plain. 6 or 7 kylix stems 2 tops of stirrup jugs 3 deep bowls (kotylai?) One décor. with broad wavy line red on red buff. The others with simple spirals in brown black [MN: from Megaron House; brackets indicate this note refers to the 3 deep bowls] [Nakassis: CP 106, 107, 109] [p. 353] on yellow buff. The decoration in each case is only in upper half. Pithoi 2 very large ones with incised rope band round neck and belly [Tzonou-Herbst= Blegen 1921, p. 73, fig. 106, Large pithos from House L, LH III. CP 137. Stored in Old Epigraphikon.] Minyan 6 or 8 sherds Mattmalerei 1 sherd certainly Urfirnis 2 or 3 maybe Obsidian 2 pieces Spindle whorls 2 of steatite [James-Nakassis: the "small pavement of small stones" is plausibly the "pebble floor" referred to on the base of CP 107. As Rutter 1974: 129-31 notes, we can therefore associate CP 107 with this earlier floor of House L.] | |
