| Notes: | We leveled the middle sect. of East Aisle another 15 cm. This is level IV and goes from 75 cm down to 90. Tzonou-Herbst=This section from the date to this point written in purple pencil. Many pieces of good Mycenaean pottery were found. Most of the pieces seem to belong to LM II. [NB 84, p. 55, 23 June 1916, written by CWB]: The most interesting trench today is in the alley between L and M where we are going down to a considerable depth. In the top layers LM III of late sort is characteristic. At depth of ca 0.75 there begin to be a good many LM II sherds and at 1.00 m LM I seems to be predominant. We got a good many fine sherds – especially fragments of a pot with octopods separated by a lily design (?) We have both handles and numerous chunks of this. Tzonou-Herbst=CP 3012, 3013, 3014, 3015, 3016 (Blegen 1921, p. 47, fig. 63, no. 12), 3017, 3018, 3019, 3020 (Blegen 1921, p. 47, fig. 63, no. 7), now stored PG, case 1, drawer 1. Dated LH II by Blegen. [NB 84, p. 58, 24 June 1916, written by CWB]: There seems to be a floor level at 0.85 or 0.90 (This corresponds to 0.80 in Trench L of last year) Below this floor are great masses of sherds. [NB 85, p. 43, CWB, almost certainly from all sections of level IV]: E.A. IV 0.75-0.90 (much papsed) (=LM III) Mycenaean painted LM III ca. 145 sherds (most of them good LM III) LM II ca. 64 sherds (LM I-II) Ephyraean 12 sherds seem to be Red monochrome 65 sherds Black “ 62 “ Unpainted buff ca. 100 “ Minyan 5 sherds Mattmalerei 21 sherd Coarse 6 sherds Flint 1 piece | |
