Notes:   Basket 101 is a sandy area marked by an abundance of small pebbles. This area lies to the east of Wall 190 and was exposed during the excavation of basket 100. The soil on this side of the wall is characterized by several patches of soils that vary in color, texture and composition. B101 is one of these patches. We are excavating it in order to determine how this patch relates to the other various patches and to clarify the boundaries of the patches in hopes that some sort of uniformity will emerge.
After removing all of the pebbly soil accessible in the bottom of 100, the area was determined to extend under the scarp to the E (B 92, 94). Therefore, we are stopping work on B101 to remove the layers over it. The red area to the SE, a remnant of B94, will be removed first as B102.
After the completion of B102, we found that B101 did extend beneath it to the south and east. The bottom of B101 also appears as a sandy area with many small pebbles in the bottom of the Archaic cutting. B101 may therefore be the earliest layer cut by the Archaic pit. This bottom layer is a mottled grey and red and extends into the scarp on all sides, except for a possible boundary in the very SE corner of 101 where the soil is very red.
After finishing B104 (see p. 182) we found a boundary between the pebbly layer at the bottom of 104, which we think is the same as what is found in B101, and an area of red earth on the S. We initially thought that the red areas in B101 and 104 might indicate a vertical boundary; but after some pebbles were removed from 101 with a trowel, the pebbly layer seemed to be a thin layer on top of more red earth.
