Area:   Panaghia north
Category:   Basket/zembil

Context:   52

Date:   2006/05/18
Stratum:   Fill E of wall 294, N of wall 215; greyish brown silty, coarse sand that is well compacted. 10-25% inclusions of small-coarse pebbles, tile, & painted plaster at N end of trench. B 52 is immediately east of B51.
Notes:   Small cobbles of limestone appear as the trench approaches the N end, near wall 278 & B 38. The majority of the plaster from this B also came from the N area of the trench. Very little was found in the S end. Most of the plaster is red with a few chunks of black. Tile was found in the S end. Both a large and a small pick were used in the excavation of this area.
Note that B51 and B52 may be the same stratum. They were dug separately b/c the pick man detected a slight variation in the color of the soil.
A continuation of the drain from the west was discovered under wall 278. The drain breaks off about 3/4 of the way through the wall. There are no cover tiles visible on the part of the drain that is under the wall. The drain was later cleaned and photographed.
At the N end of the trench a few large stone boulders may mark a continuation of wall 291.
B52 was stopped arbitrarily in order to dig a softer patch of greyish brown dirt as B 53 and to engage in the cleaning operation B54. The stratum B52 will be continued as B55.
