Stratum:   destruction deposit S of wall 291, E of wall 294, and N of the E-W wall N of wall 215; reddish-brown, compact, sandy silty soil, poorly sorted, with 15% inclusions of tile and cobbles
Notes:   Towards the center of this basket, ca. E 410.80-411.65/N 971.55-972.25, there was a different type of soil (reddish-brown, loose, silty, moderately sorted soil with 90% inclusions of medium pebbles. This soil seems to be an isolated patch--perhaps it is part of a floor surface? We have further exposed a worked block discovered in Basket 68; this block is roughly 120 cm. long and seems to lie underneath wall 291. We hope that the relationship between this block and walls 291 and 294 will become clear in later excavation. At present, this relationship is not immediately obvious. This block seems to be on the Hellenistic orientation (cf. wall 287 and wall 271). Mudbrick and a few bits of charcoal are present. The finds (loomweights, iron, nails, bronze, ceramic moulds, gilded terracotta, etc.) and soil composition of Basket 69 are compatible with Basket 70; these baskets are part of the same destruction deposit. Finds are indicative and most appropriate for a domestic space: iron nails, ca. 23 fragments were found, primarily in the NE part of the basket (E 411.70-412.10/N 972.20-972.60); terracotta figurines, 3 fragments, 2 female heads, 1 with polos; a lead weight; coins, 2 were found from dry sieving and 1 at E 410.75/N 970.99 with an elevation of 91.07; terracotta with gold leaf, 2 more fragments were found (the first from Basket 69) with one at E 410.84/N 971.79 with an elevation of 91.05; a terracotta plaque; mould-made bowl moulds, several fragments have been found and relate to or join with those in Basket 69 and/or NB 977 Basket 55; stamped amphora handle; painted plaster, 1 fragment, plaster is rarely found in this basket; bronze, many items were found, such as thin strips, possible clamps/fastening devices, and a sickle, found at E 411.70/N 972.11 with an elevation of 91.09. 31 tiles were counted with a weight of 12.7 kg. We are sieving all soil with 1 out of 5 zembils being water-sieved. We stopped this basket after removing ceramic pieces from a possible floor.
