Stratum:   Exploration of the amphora pit
Notes:   The matrix of this basket is sandy silt weakly cemented with 5% to 10% pebbles. B51 is the exploration of the pit with the amphora in it. The basket is a shallow picking in and around the pit in an attempt to define the edges of the fill, the cut stratum and potentially the entrance and exit of the water pipe trench into the pit. Soil changes are very slight, to the N and the S, but the edges of the pit are defined on the E and the W by the blocks of W271, which were cut in a rough circle to accommodate the amphora. To the N the basket revealled two segments of water pipe which pass through the amphora. Some debris was removed from the pit, including the neck of a large amphora with roughly the same fabric as the one that is within the pit. Also the thickness of the walls of the neck is very similar to the body that is inside the pit so it could be part of it. Also some fragments of roof tile and water pipe were removed that seemed to be jammed into the space between the amphora and the sides of the wall. On the S side of the amphora no pipe extended from the body of the vessel, though a section of water pipe was located ca. 0.15m from the amphora in line with the N segments. A fragment of roof tile was pressed against the amphora where a circular cut was expected though when it was removed no cut in the pipe was present. The disjunction of the pipe on the S side of the amphora might signal a later disturbance in the area. The amphora has been left in place as it is still connected to the water pipe trench on the N end. Furthermore it has not been fully exposed at this point, so there might boe some cut lower down at its body, although this is probably unlikely. The soil of the this basket was dry sieved.
