Stratum:   Foundation trench to the west of Wall 289. The stratum is light/medium reddish brown silty clay with a few pebbles and 35% cobble, loose.
Notes:   B 16 is the removal of the tile/rubble pocket against Wall 289. Although the soil seems very similar to B 15 and even somewhat similar to B 14 (the difference in hue could be due to the drying out of the soil), we removed B 16 as its own layer. During the excavation the soil became more clayish but since the change was gradual we kept going. Also, during sieving (we sieved 80% and kept 20% for water-sieving), we discovered a coin. The lower we went in B 16 the fewer cobbles emerged and there are almost no pebbles. The removal of B 16 has taken the elevation of the NE corner below the edge of Pit 2006-01. There are a few pockets of carbon, mostly in the NE part. We stopped excavating B 16 when largish cobbles emerged and little soil. Also, from a previous trench, which had excavated the east face of Wall 289, we knew that the bottom of that wall was approaching our elevation. As for the bottom of B 12, we determined that it reveals a road because of the compactness of the soil, the cobbles, the width (1.60 M), and the alignment over the sewer. However, what B 13 exposed is different. Found bronze. See pg. 28 for photos of the Foundation Trench. See pg. 26 for top plan.
