Stratum:   Possible pit between Walls 215 and 260. The stratum is dark/medium yellowish brown sandy clay with 30% pebbles and 25% cobbles, loose.
Notes:   B 42 is the continuation of B 41 as excavation of what appears to be a pit, which might contain a burial. At first the soil was the same as that of B 41, but gradually it became yellowish and clayish. Also, close to the tiles and two protruding stones, very large stones appeared. One of them, which is against the western cut appears to be upright and worked. In defining the edges of the cut, we determined that the pit appears to go under the foundation/wall running E-W south of Wall 215 (Wall 292). As well as between the two protruding stones from Wall 260 and the defined edge running N-S. We stopped excavating because we came down upon an amphora neck with a skyphos as a lid. The skyphos has been broken and so it may have been disturbed. We want to excavate the amphora as its own basket. Furthermore we are going to investigate to see if we should take down the wall foundations and extend our pit (or follow the pit) farther north and west. Because the upright worked stone provides the boundary or what seems to be the hard edge/cut, there must be a connection, which we will also further investigate. See pg. 75 for photos of amphora and skyphos. See pg. 74 for top plan.
