Notes:   With B49 we are digging the pipe trench in the S portion of Trench 978. The soil is being sieved; there may be a very slight contamination of this material with a small amount of loose earth from the N edge of Trench 978. We have reached the top of the pipe at an el. Of 91.14. Based primarily on the cut corner of the uppermost architectural block, the W boundary of the stone/tile feature, and the N extent of the pipe trench in Trench 978, and based to a significant though lesser extent on the relatively softer earth in the strip that we thought to be the pipe trench as it was dug in B47, we seem to have more or less dug the correct area of the pipe trench from the S end of the basket to the N extent of the large architectural blocks. We do not, however, have an absolutely accurate trench cut for the laying of the pipe; there was not a strong enough soil distinction to find the exact edge. This inaccuracy is reflected in the positioning of the vertical tile at the S edge of Trench 980. The tile likely defines the E wall of the pipe trench cut by laying against the wall. However, as we have dug this portion of the pipe trench, the tile itself is the limit of the cut. So, the cut is almost certainly several cm. further to the E than it has been dug.
