Stratum:   foundation trench for wall 291, phase 1; dark brown, loose, silty, poorly sorted soil with 70% inclusions ranging from fine pebbles to cobbles
Notes:   A coin was found at E 411/ N 972.39 with an elevation of 90.86. This is a stratum directly abutting wall 291, phase 1 and looks like a foundation trench; it runs parallel with the wall. This basket becomes more irregular, however, as it approaches the W; this may be due to disturbance later on. NB 976 Basket 79 cuts into this foundation trench and may account for such disturbance. We are getting a few early sherds, possibly Geometric and Archaic in date. While the inclusions of Basket 2 and NB 976 Basket 79 are comparable, we are getting considerably more pottery in Basket 2, suggesting a definite cultural horizon. Occasionally there are chunks of limestone. A worked limestone disc (amphora stopper?) and a handstone/grinder, measuring 20 cm. long, 12 cm. wide, and 8 cm. thick, were found.
