Stratum:   Pit or expansion of wall 294 foundation trench. Lightly compacted reddish-brown fill with up to 20% inclusions (pottery, terracotta pipe, pebbles)
Notes:   We opened a basket in the NW corner of the trench where the clayey soil appears to cut into black ash-rich fill in the center and also must cut the foundation trench of wall 294, which suddenly stops north of N975.15. After two small pick passes we encountered a large broken stone and several smaller stones (cobbles) with a roof tile, suggesting a debris-filled pit was here. Unfortunately we have overdug to the SE corner of this feature (assuming it is a pit cut along the wall), where many fragments of large pots and water pipe came up to the basket, but must be from a lower debris fill into which this (apparent) pit and the wall 294 foundation trench are both cut. We began sieving the fill at the level of the large stone (el. 91.01) since not much pottery was being recovered by hand, although many tiny fragments were being shoveled out with the dirt. The fill in the pit is clay-rich (clayey silt) and could be pulverized red mud bricks. We took out small stones on the edges to accommodate digging in the corner.
Eventually it became impossible to continue down in the corner, so we stopped the basket in the afternoon.
-16/06/06: The feature appears to be a pit based on the cutting of dark fill to the east and the foundation trench to the south, but many stones are pressed up tightly into the face of Wall 294--while none appear to be bonded yet, it seems possible that this area could be the continuation of the wall 294 foundation trench, but where the older blocks were encountered in the line of the foundation trench. If it is part of the foundation trench, it still cuts the earlier lines of trenches (Bask 37) to the south.
