Stratum:   Rubble over E side of hearth. Reddish brown fill with 40-90% debris (red bricks, yellow clay masses, angular cobbles, tiles)
Notes:   With this basket we are taking the rubble which overlies the newly exposed hearth (B54-55) below. It is relatively compact because so much of the fill is fallen mud-brick clay, and there are many tiles and cobbles in a jumbled mass (a pile, not fallen on a flat surface). One vertically-articulated stone at the top appears to have rested against the B54 ashy fill in the hearth. We are sieving the soil. After two passes removing mud-brick and smaller stones, we halted the basket because many pieces were going into the N scarp, where we will be diggin out in the B53 extension area. Better to leave this intact, since we are not absolutely sure where the east border of the hearth is -- a line of stones did not come out below the upper debris layer of the B56.
