Stratum:   Cleaning NE corner of rectangular foundation. Semi-compact reddish brown silty sand 10% inclusion small pebbles
Notes:   This basket is cleaning of the NE corner of the rectangular foundation. The south leg of the corner was one course of stone lower than the rest of the south foundation wall and the soil was more compact, so we knew something else had happened there. Small pick digging revealed a piece of iron (E413,05-413,30/N976,65-976.90; elevfation 90,80-90,86) right at the corner of this foundation.
The chunk of iron, a good 21 x 26 x 13 cm fragment, was resting on a reddish compact fill with many angular large pebbles (like the working chips above the colluvium to the south, such as B60), and the shape of the deposition suggest that the iron was set in a little hole cut into this working chip fill (the chips ramp up to the south as if cut away for the iron wad in red silty soil). We cleaned down to the stones and the chip fill here. The stones in this area were coated with a yellowish-tan mortar with a heavy aggregate (water-proofing?) and it seems we either have a chute leading into a basin with the four walls 9a water reservoir), or steps of a water tank, or something else like a doorway or some related industrial installation. The chip fil is accumulated on top of the mortared threshold and thus post-dates theh abandonment of the 4-walled "basin". Sso it should be compared to the B60 chip fill as indication of the sealing over of this feature at one time. The lump of iron, naturally, being cut into the chipfill, comes later yet.
