Stratum:   Pit
Notes:   The matrix of this basket is reddish brown sandy silt, compact to loose, with less than 2% pebble and cobble inclusions. B5 is the continuation of B4 in the same area. It is believed that it is a bothros cut within the rest of the stratum. The main reason for excavating in this area first is that the pottery that comes from here appears to be of a later date compared to what is recovered around B5. A mass of what appears to be cement (brown coat) has been uncovered in the W scarp of B5 and traces of the same material appear all over the stratum. At a certain point a light brown layer with pebble and roof tile fragment inclusions is reached that possibly forms the bottom of the bothros pit, at least to the N of the cement mass. This layer needs to be examined to determine whether it continues into the N, W and S scarp of B5 or if it is simply a different phase of the fill within the bothros pit. Upon the recovery of an olive pit it is decided to reserve 20% of soil for water sieving. After a few shallow passes another piece of the cement mass is uncovered and the first one is removed since it appears to be floating. To the W of W294 a differantiation in the soil is noted that spreads ca. 0.1 m. away from the wall. The soil is more loose and of a light brown color. As of this point it is being treated as a foundation trench for W294 although further investigation is required in order to verify this. Immediatelly to the E of the so called foundation trench the matrix of B5 seems to continue below the level of the pebble and roof tile fragment layer, although some slight change can be noted, where the soil seems to be somewhat more compact. It is decided to end this basket here and proceed into removing the layer with the pebble and roof tile fragment inclusions in a different basket. Until the recovery of the olive pit 100% of the soil was dry sieved, and thereafter 80% was dry sieved.
