Stratum:   Interface mix of 22 and 24. Light greyish brown. Fine grained soft with 10% inclusions, fine to medium pebbles poorly sorted. Silty sand.
Notes:   Basket 23 removes the ashy layer to the N and NW of the western-most stones defining the hearth. This proved to be a mix of brown soil and ash. This basket was directly to the west but the ash was primarily found to the NW. The elevation was significantly lower than the floor of the hearth based on leveling tiles in the foundation of the hearth. It is unclear if this is due to hearth overflow or multiple phases of hearth activity. It seems that there was significant ash overflow in all dierections from this hearth, however this baskets seems very low for overflow. Initially, it seems to us to be evidence of multiple uses. Hopefully, this will be clarified in future deposits, since this basket contained a mix of ash and brown soil, we closed it once the ash area was better defined. The better defined ash area was thu removed in the next basket, 24. A bronze coin was found at E410.28, N977.32, elevation 90.91: this exact spot was in the ashy soil of this basket and directly south of wall 297.
