Stratum:   Rough tile surface. Light yellowish brown. Coarse grain weakly cemented. 75% inclusions. Cobble to boulders poorly sorted. Clayey sand.
Notes:   This basket begins removing the pebble and tile layer exposed after the removal of the compact soil layer in basket 2. As previously noted in earlier baskets, this layer is a rough sloping surface. The layer was observed from the eastern edge of wall 290 to the eastern edge of the tile-lined box area. A sembil and a half of tiles were collected. This tile lined surface seems to have been associated with a leveling course of tiles under the top couse of wall stones in wall 290. It appeared as if the tile course was an extension of the leveling wall course. The tile lined surface continued into the area where the tile lined box was excavated. It seems that the sloping tile surface was in use prior to the use of the tile lined box. After removing the tile surface, another possible surface was observed in an area just east of wall 290. There were a number of tiles and pottery sherds lying horizontally and this deposit will be removed in the next basket. We have identified this area as another possible rough surface, however the til, rock and pottery area appears in a limited area and is not as widespread as the rough surface taken out at the top of basket 3.
