Notes:   The top surface of Basket 33 was revealed at the end of Basket 31. The basket was located in the northeast of the trench and we thought that the top of the basket may have represented a hard packed soil surface at elevation 91.01. The soil was very compact at this layer and there was a large charcoal smear. Because of this possible surface, we dry sieved all of the soil. As this basket progressed, a number of soil distinctions were observed. At the end of the basket, the workmen had identified five different strata, some of which will be excavated in the following baskets. The first distinction was a thin strip of yellow brown soil just south of Wall 297. This may represent a cutting for a foundation trench and will be excavated in basket 37. South of this, there was a large section of red pebbly soil, which we thought to be alluvial fill. This red soil is probably the first deposit and the soil that the surrounding strata eventually cut into. A third stratum was defined by dark brown in the North-West area of the trench; this will be excavated in Basket 35. There was another yellow-brown stratum that appeared on top of and just north of Wall 298, the north cistern wall. This stratum will be excavated in Basket 36. Finally, the fifth soil difference was another brown layer that was not well defined and seems to cover the extension of the possible foundation trench line for Wall 297. This last area was just outside the western basket; Basket 34 will examine this soil in order to clarify.
