Title:   Room 1 Agricultural Zone
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   26
Date:   2016/06/01
Stratum:   Mixed soil: from firm to very soft. Estimated at 5% small to medium sized sherds, 5% medium-sized rounded stones (toward top of the deposit), 5% tile pieces, and occasional flecks of charcoal.
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We opened context 26 as Thanasis detected a change from the brown soil of 4 (and the cleaning of 17) to a black soil in the southern and western area of Room 1. The black soil is perhaps the product of agricultural activity and appears to slope downward toward the cistern. Excavation began in the NW corner. The uppermost layer of soil (exposed since 2015) was relatively hard, but the workers otherwise described the soil as very soft. There was very little pottery from this area, and we halted excavation in the SW corner once we exposed a layer of red soil with a greater concentration of tile sherds, south of wall 10. This context was then closed because the area was large enough that we thought it best to create an artificial boundary in order to excavate more carefully, but we believe that 26 and 29 form the same deposit. One nail, a piece of glass, a possible stone blade, and a possible grindstone were found within this context.
