This wall is being recorded as part of a plan to apply to have walls removed in this part of the site in order to reveal the 11th century AD phase of a house for public display. This wall was revealed by excavations in 1961, recorded in NB 229 (see pg 188). It was never given a wall number in 1961. The condition of this wall at present is poor. A tree was allowed to grow at its east end for many years and this seriously disturbed the east 1/2 of the wall. When this wall was planned by Travlos, it was shown to continue to the west until it joined with a north-south wall (2007 recored as wall 5342). However, at present there are no blocks that join this wall to wall 5342 and there is a gap of 0.63m. Erosion has undercut the deposits under the wall revealing that the wall (the extant part) is founded on rubble consisting of small cobbles and pebbles of various sizes, roof tile fragments and degraded building material. This foundation does not continue in the section where there is a gap in the wall. This leads me to interpret this gap as a threshold. When Travlos planned this wall there could have been stones filling this gap-but if so, those stones have been displaced by time and the elements or excavation since then.
