Context:   1055

Date:   2013/04/15
Stratum:   15%; ceramic sherds, fine and medium pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level down to the SW. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We opened this context in order to remove an area of higher fill near the SE corner of the Turkish house. During the excavation of the two previous contexts in this section, this small area had remains at a higher level than the adjacent areas due to its harder packed soil. Although this area was nominally excavated in 1052 and 1053, very little soil was removed, especially in 1053. As the excavation continued, a concentration of tile was exposed. This tile, too, may be related to 1046 and 1053.
We stopped excavating this deposit once we came upon another tile layer. Thus, right now it seems that a single dumped fill of a destruction material was excavated as a number of separate contexts (1046, 1052, 1057 below this context).
24/4/2013
Even though the pottery of the context was dated as Byzantine NPD, this date was assigned on the basis of one sherd, which in fact might be the result of contamination from the wall of the Turkish house.
