Stratum:   30% inclusions: ceramic, tile, coin, metal, bronze, charcoal, lots of marble and lime; 3 baskets of pottery collected
Description:   Top slope of the context is sharp down to the S. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   This is a dark red fill with heavy tile and ceramic inclusions found under contexts 1106-1108. The surrounding soil (except for Wall 945) is a hard, yellow clayey soil. This context appears to cut this soil in a roughly semi-circular cut. The boundary between these contexts is very clear. Despite this cutting the surrounding soil, we are still unsure if the surrounding contexts are part of the same deposit or not because the surface is very uneven.
In the fill are very large pieces of tile and brick, but few other types of finds. Several pieces of marble revetment were also found, as well as pockets of white mortar and charcoal. The deeper the pit is dug, the more lime appears.
The removal of this context ends when we come down on a hard-packed layer with no inclusions to the West--this is probably a floor. The current context 1109 contains a lot of mortar which is not present in the surface visible to the West. The East border of the pit is a reddish, harder soil with fewer inclusions.
The Wall 945 that is this pit's N boundary is revealed to have an edge on the West side.
The sides of the pit, especially to the East, show many layers of dirt with basically the same inclusions that we've been digging for the last 6 days, so we may start digging in the area to the NW of where we have been, which is GDRS's suggestion.
