Context:   1136

Stratum:   5-10% pottery, tiles, pebbles and small rocks (max 7 cm.)
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NW. The soil color is dark greyish red. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   After cleaning and sweeping the area to the east of the Turkish house immediately to the north of context 1136 (this included the removal by chainsaw of a particularly pernicious root), Session 3 blue team opened context 1136 in cut 1040. Context 1136 is located below fill 1031, which was excavated by Session 1 blue team. The goal was to remove all potential contamination from the robbing trench in order to finish excavating the "buffer zone" to the west between cut 1040 and deposit 1080 left after session 1.
We closed the context when Thanasis (pickman) exposed a lower area of differentiated soil beneath this mixed, semi-compacted dump fill. The northern two-thirds of the context exposed a more compact, reddish section with larger rocks, while the southern third appeared much looser and yellower. This southern third is possibly a continuation of the pit to the south (cut 870).
Context 1136, the fill of cut 1040, made clear that the areas to the west (context 1143) and east (unexcavated) are different deposits from each other. This lends support to the idea that cut 1040 represents a robbed out wall which was standing when 1143 (and 1080) were deposited to the west, and that the the unexcavated soil was laid down at the east between the wall and drain 1026.
