Title:   Tile threshold south of well 742
Category:   Structure
Notebook:   1107
Context:   1158
Page:   0
Date:   2013/05/30
Stratum:   Tiles; no finds
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish grey. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand. Structure materials: Broken tiles, mostly flat, some slightly curved. Material size: 2-3 cm thick; range from 5x7 to 13x17 cm. Material bonding: None.
Notes:   This square feature immediately south of Well 742 seems to represent some sort of access threshold to the well. It consists of two discrete layers of flat lying tile, set on a hard plastery soil which appears to be the same elevation and composition as context 1156. This tile structure rests on a large, rough hewn ashlar.
The two layers of tiles were removed very quickly, exposing a roughly square (0.60x0.60 m) ashlar which is likely spoliated from some other structure. Nothing was found apart from the tiles, which were loosely set, not bonded with any plaster or other material.
We've had some difficulty figuring out which context initially exposed this feature in 2012, as it seems its presence should have been observed and discussed at some point. 781, dated to the Frankish period by pottery, seems the most likely candidate as "cleaning around the well" which exposed the well features. The grid coordinates and elevations seem to correspond more closely than any other likely context (e.g. 908, which is to far to the north and west).
Less likely is 643, excavated 2012 Session 1, which represents an earlier cleaning around well 742; no Harris Matrix relationships were recorded, and the closing elevation of this context (86.65) is still above the top of the threshold (86.58). Also, the notes for context 684, the fill in the cut for wall 366, note a large block in the north scarp which may correspond to the ashlar under the tiles, but this view would be from the side rather than exposure on the top.
