Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish black. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 1214 was created after the pottery from Deposit 1200 was read. Because the pottery read from the deposit filling the pit 1211 was sorted into a later, 3rd quarter of the 12th c. CE category, deposit 1214 was created to represent the earlier 11th c. material. Though deposit 1214 was assigned arbitrarily, it corresponds to the pottery excavated from the lower levels of pit 1211, which was dug on the second day of excavating the pitdeposit (6/6/13). The deposit could therefore be dated to the 11th c. with later contamination of upper levels.
Problematic with this division, however, are the characteristics of the pit fill: inclusions were diverse-- small and very large (tile, pottery, rocks, bones, etc.) materials that continued throughout the deposit-- i.e., at all elevations. This would seem to suggest that it served as a dump, and represented the period-of-use for cut 1211, likely putting the pit out of use.
Rather than seeing this as two deposits that failed to be distinguished strategraphically, the two phases of pottery (11th and 3rd quarter of the 12th c.) could represent a contamination of later material by the eastern cut which truncated pit 1211.
Update 18/6/13: It is now clear that deposits 1200 and 1214, which filled pit 1211, was not a self-contained pit fill. The cut 1211 turned out to be arbitrary, and deposits 1200 and 1214 are actually part of a larger bothros, cut 1245. This larger bothros was excavated in 4 arbitrary levels, which will make deposit 1200 roughly equivilent to deposits 1234 and 1238; deposit 1214 is therefore roughly equivilent to deposits 1241 and 1244.
