| Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is mixed- see description. | |
| Notes: | Cooking pot itself resting on a thin layer of clay that was removed with the cooking pot. This cooking pot, with handle and rim preserved to sufficiently allow a full profile reconstruction, was inserted upside-down into floor 1215, and was later respected by 1203. (I.e., 1203 was laid up against the cooking pot). Floor 1215 was cut (1216) for the insertion of the upside-down stewpot (1217), which dates the floor to the Late Classical Period (2nd half of the 4th c. BCE). Sarah James identified and dated this cooking pot to the 2nd half of the 4th c. BCE. This shallow cut was only c. 5 cm deep in order to accommodate the rim of the vessel. This is interesting because it proves that the vessel was used/venerated for at least two phases; floor 1215 was cut for it, and floor 1203 was laid against it. The vessel dates broadly to the second half of the 4th century B.C.E. as Corinth VII.6, III-59, thus providing a terminus post quem for the earliest habitation level currently visible in our area. | |
