Corinth Basket: Nezi Field, context 153
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Nezi Field, context 153
Area:   Nezi Field
Title:   Pit fill, north edge of pit
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1100
Context:   153
Page:   0
Date:   2007/05/22
Stratum:   Inclusions: 30% pebbles, 20% cobbles, white flecks scattered throughout (less than 15%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is steep down to the S. Bottom slope of the context is steep. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This basket returns to the north edge of the pit to take out the harder, red soil which slides down towards the south edge. It seems to have been deposited before basket 150. There is a lot of whit matter scattered through the soil in this layer. This layer slopes substantially to the south as it slides. I don't belive the pit could be a well if the blocks to the south of this basket are actually a wall. We have pulled out three large chunks of iron We have found a stone object that appears to have been worked on both sides although it is completely unidentifiable.
It is now the second day of excavating this basket, which is quite large, but it didn't rain last night so it is not a problem with respect to the soil
We are coming down on a harder, grittier layer but I don't know yet if the pit has bottomed out.
It has been raining but the soil is not exceptionally wet and this layer remains visible.
There is a small hole that seems to run under the harder patch which we haven't excavated yet. I am not sure what this signifies but Guy has suggested it may mean we have a well after all.
We believe we have a well because some of the bedrock appears to be worked and curves around in a circular wall. It may be that the well itself is in the northern half of the trench and the area we have been digging was a larger pit dug until they hit bedrock.
Finds; iron, glass, coins, bronze, marble (worked), unknown stone object, loom weight, ceramic hand, 1 marble revetment (dumped into marble pile, not kept), wall plaster, wood, bone stylus, and worked bone
