Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is very dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Excavation begins west of the 2007 Nezi Field excavations. Our portion of the 2008 excavation area is artificially defined by the southern scarp of the 1960's Robinson excavations to the north, the western scarp of the 2007 to the east, and an area bulldozed for excavation to the south. The western limit follows the western line of the bulldozed area.
Context 229 represents the layer of topsoil removed after cleaning. Due to vigorous cleaning, topsoil remained only in the northern portion of the excavation area. In the southern part, cleaning revealed a row of concrete slabs, an area of pebbles and cobbles, and an area of cobbles and tiles. The concrete slabs run roughly east-west across the middle of our area. Four larger slabs have L-shaped metal pins, and two of these have an additional pin of irregular shape. Several smaller concrete slabs were visible along the same lines, but more irregularly spaced. The four larger slabs are post foundations for a modern fence still visible around the field to the west. The smaller slabs are the remains of the second fence running along the same orientation. The same foundations for both fences were present also in the adjacent 2007 excavations to the east.
South of the western two concrete slabs, the area uncovered during cleaning appears somewhat compact and has no visible large inclusions.
Also exposed during cleaning was an area of cobbles and pebbles in the southeast quadrant. This will be dug later as a separate context.
Also visible is an area of cobbles and tiles between the western two concrete slabs. This is also kept separate from the area of context 229.
The topsoil represented by context 229 contains fragments of tiles and cobbles. The soil also contained grass and numerous roots. As we remove the topsoil, we reveal the top of a stone wall that seems to lay under the concrete slabs. As more loose soil is removed, larger cobbles and tile fragments come out with the soil. Because the soil seems to be the same, we continue to remove these inclusions as part of context 229. Several very large roots emerge along the face of the wall. As the density of cobbles and tiles increases, we decide despite the same soil that the increased number of and size of inclusions constitutes a new context.
Between the concrete slabs, cobbles and tiles that were revealed in these areas were left undug, including the area revealed during cleaning. These areas appear to be the same deposit and will be dug as a single context.
At this time, after cleaning the entire area, we observe that the area previously identified as cobbles and pebbles seems to constitute mainly pebbles and extends over a larger area. It is clear that two small patches of topsoil remain covering this area and we remove these together as a separate context (230).
The stone wall may be the continuation of the "east-west" wall removed in the adjacent 2007 excavations.
At this point, we suspect also that context 229, which has been dug as topsoil, was actually overdug into the context below. However, we expect that the new context below context 229 will turn out to be the same soil and that we will still have an uncontaminated sample of this deposit.
