Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 240 covers the entire area south of the E-W wall and the N-S wall. The context is fairly deep and requires 2 passes before uncovering any new deposits. The soil is consistent throughout, with inclusions of pebbles, cobbles, and tiles.
Revealed under Context 240 along the south face of the E-W wall, and extending towards the south scarp, is a white area of soil filled with many lime inclusions throughout. There are chunks of lime cement up to ca. 10cm in size that crumble easily in the hand. The lime is so prevalent that the deposit itself appears white. This lime deposit appears to be on either side of the line of the clay pipe, and it appears that the pipe cuts through this deposit. The layer of lime is also visible in the north scarp, where it also seems to interact with the pipe, which is also visible in the scarp. This lime area most likely belongs to a construction deposit as lime was a commonly used material in construction of walls and lime-cement floors.
Small patches of lime appear in the soil south of the deposit which suggest that the lime layer may continue to the south under this area. We decide to trace the extent of the lime deposit by contining to remove the soil south of this area (where the small patches are visible) also as part of context 240.
As context 240 is removed over the area of the pipe we still see no visible change in the soil that would indicate a cut for the installation of the pipe. We spray the area with water to look for possible color change, but the soil still appears to be of the same deposit. We decide to continue context 240 in a very thin layer using a trowel over the line of the pipe. As the soil is removed over the pipe, the pipe becomes partially exposed at the point where it runs into the south side of the E-W wall. Over the rest of the pipe we find a deposit of tiles. We also note that the elevation of the pipe is higher towards the north and therefore that the water ran south through the pipe.
As we dig deeper while trying to find the extent of the lime deposit we find that the deposit does not extend further than what was previously visible. Therefore, we have possibly dug through a new context that has tiny scattered lime inclusions. However, we do have some idea of the upper elevation of this deposit as this soil began at approximately the same level as the top of the white lime area. When we realize this we stop digging. This leaves a small higher area undug along the west side of the tile deposit covering the clay pipe. We also stop digging on the east side of the pipe. At this time we will move to the area north of the E-W wall in order to eventually expose the lime deposit layer visible in the north scarp, and to see the relationships between this lime deposit to the pipe and the E-W wall.
During the removal of context 240 more of the south face of the E-W wall is exposed, and we are able to observe the lower construction of the wall. Below the top preserved layer of larger (and in some cases cut) stones sits a rubble construction composed of cobbles. These are organized generally as linear rows of stones, which is still distinctly different from the construction of the N-S. No foundation trenches have yet been found for either wall.
