| Notes: | When we remove Context 246 we uncover a second pebbly layer that appears white with tiny lime inclusions throughout the soil. There are also small pockets of lime scattered throughout. This layer most likely indicates a construction phase, as this is the type of material used for building cement. This soil matches the white layer that was previously noted as visible (see notes for Context 240) in the north scarp. At that time we had considered the possibility that the white layer seen in the scarp was associated with the white area along the south face of the E-W wall, however, this no longer seems to be the case. It is clear now that the white pebbly fill under Context 246 on north side of the the E-W wall runs over the clay drainpipe. This layer in fact extends up to the edge of the wall, including the area where the wall was cut for the installation of the pipe. Therefore the white lime layer is later than both the drain and the E-W wall. It appears that the pipe cuts through the wall itself because the stones in the foundation course for the wall are disturbed in the area over the pipe. If this is the case, the E-W wall would date earlier than the pipe. At this point we determine that there is no apparent relationship between the white lime layer to the south of the E-W wall and this white pebble layer now visible on the north. The white area on the south is at a lower elevation, at the level of the foundation course of the wall but not touching it, and seems to have been associated with something else. Additionally, the southern white area does seem to be cut by the clay pipe as this white soil is visible on either side of the pipe, but was not present in the soil over it. Where part of the foundations for the E-W wall have been exposed along its south face, the construction the wall becomes clearer. The remains of the superstructure of large and and sometimes worked stones sit on courses of smaller unworked stones. It seems that in the construction a trench was cut only as wide as the wall itself and then filled with rubble to form the foundations for the wall. In this case, the only evidence of a foundation trench would be the looser soil just against the face of the wall and between the stones on the exterior face. This may explain why no clear foundation trench was found when digging the fills on either side of the E-W wall. Also uncovered by Context 246 is the outline of a large pit located between the E-W wall and the north scarp of the excavation area. The pit sits in the corner where the E-W wall turns north, but does not reach either part of the wall. As the pit cuts through the white pebbly layer exposed under Context 246, and is thus of a later date, we dig this fill next (as Context 247).
