Stratum:   Mostly cobbles, pebbles and tile fragments (cobbles and pebbles of mixed shapes and sizes); a few boulders; some ceramic sherds, small quantity of bone and shell. 70% inclusions.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark greenish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 249 fills a pit, which is cut by cut 248 (which cut created a pit filled by context 247). Context 249 is truncated on the North by the scarp of previous excavation, and on the East, South and West by a cutting. Regarding soil characteristics: the soil of 249 differs slightly from 247, which is the fill of the pit (cut 248) which cuts fill 249. Fill 247 had mostly tile, cobble and boulder inclusions, whereas Fill 249 contains mostly cobbles and pebbles and less tile and pottery, and no boulders. Given the arrangement of the cuts and the characteristics of the fill, we distinguished two separate pit fill: 249 (earlier) and 247 (later).
From the north end of the context only came a few (about 5) subangular boulders. It now seems as though this context may in fact be the same, or at least fill of the same cut (248) as context 247, so we suspend excavation of context 249 in order to remove the 'lip' we had left (see plan) around the E, S and W edges, thinking it might have been a secondary cutting.
Revised Interpretation (6 May 2008, MW): Excavation of the fill that underlies 249 has been postponed until such time as when the fills surrounding the top of the pit (now thought to be well) have been brought down enough to make the relations between contexts more clear. The unexcavated NW quadrant remains as a martyr and should be regarded as undisturbed pit/well fill.
