Corinth Basket: Nezi Field, context 43
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Nezi Field, context 43
Area:   Nezi Field
Title:   Pit fill, fifth stratum from top
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1100
Context:   43
Page:   0
Date:   2007/04/25
Stratum:   Inclusions 20-30%: ceramic (pottery and tile), bone, roots, stones (cobbles to medium pebbles, angular to rounded), shells, carbon frags.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. Bottom slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Slope degree (cont.): Bottom: The degree of the slope is uneven because the hard patches of soil at the N. end of the pit are higher than the rest of the bottom surface of B43. Otherwise, the slope is level.
Edge (cont.): The edge dips a bit at the N. end of the pit due to digging to define two harder patches of soil. The harder patches of soil are higher, and thus the edge is broken.
EXCAVATION NOTES:
Basket changed to B43 when black ash of B41 ceased. Soil is soft to dig. B43 lies to the W. of the hard ridge of soil along the E. side of the pit that also lay under B41.
Cut of pit convex, at least in the N. end.
In the N. end of the pit, below where the cut convex, there is another harder patch of soil, rounded and protruding (as if from side of the pit). There is also a lower patch of harder soil as well, to the E., as if the patches were two steps.
Basket ended, perhaps somewhat arbitrarily, because the boundary with the hard ridge is getting harder to define as the excavation continues downward.
We will go ahead and remove the hard ridge as a new basket (B46).
We will then be able to examine the entire pit cut.
