Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 453 is robbing trench fill that was revealed by the removal of a darker, less compact trench fill above it (450). This makes it older than 450. 453 continues the cut of robbing trench 452. The goal of excavating this context is to see if we can ascertain the extent of the robbing trench (452) and also to further enhance our understanding of the relationships between the robbed corner of walls 366 and 332, the robbing trench 452, and the robbing trench B54.
While digging 453 and trying to find the bottom of the robbing trench, Panos revealed stones that seem to be a continuation of the foundation of wall 366 toward the E. Also another line of stone has been revealed which seems to be the continuation of the foundation of wall 332 toward the N. While digging what is supposed to be the robbing trench fill we came to a level lower than the stones revealed in the robbing trench. It seems that there is no soil change but right now we cannot explain how a robbing trench was dug below the foundation stones of walls 366 and 332, revealing a course of stones that was not removed. While digging in this area we found a vessel (the top of which is missing) which was standing on the corner created by the foundation stones of 332 and the S scarp of our context. A.C. suggested that we probably have a foundation trench for wall 332 and that the vessel was part of a foundation deposit for this wall. We removed the vessel but we suspect that it belongs to a different context (the context of the foundation trench of wall 332). Points on top of vessel: 262.99E, 1006.02N, 86.65H (bottom is at 86.55H). We stopped digging in this context at the end of the day but we are planning to continue tomorrow, still in the same context, to try and clarify the situation.
7/4/09: In consultation with Guy this morning we determined that the context had been over-dug, meaning that we have gone past the limits of 453 to a lower layer of soil. We think that we have inadvertently dug into the foundation trenches for walls 366 and 332. Future excavation will need to be undertaken to ascertain whether a clear cut of the foundation trenches can be found. We have closed this context.
