Description:   The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This may be the same browner fill as in 5177. This context 5190 is taken separately because of its proximity with the retaining wall at 1023N (Structure 5197)). We are taking out loose darker brown soil with many inclusions. We came down on a continuation of the E -W wall at c. 1024 (Wall 5216). The soil has small flecks of charcoal and rare small bits of wall plaster. There are also a few small roots in the looser soil.
We come down on wall running E-W at 1023.60No and 84.93El (Wall 5216). To the south of the E-W wall, we came down on a more compact redder soil similar to the other soil in the area. The E-W wall at c. 1024 seems to abut the rock pile. The interaction between the two is somewhat unclear, but it appears that the rock pile is sitting on top of the wall. There is a possible foundation trench running along the north face of the wall c. 0.35m wide.
Revised interpretations after context 5197: The rock pile was determined to be on top of the E-W wall. The large block with a hole for a donkey tie was decided to be part of the E-W wall. The rock pile may have been a retaining wall for backfill from the 1960s excavations.
D. Structure 5197 was a retaining wall built to hold up soil of context 5190.
