Notes: | We are removing the retaining wall for 1960s excavations (rock pile) on the west side of our area. The soil uncovered is a black organic mixed with brownish brown silty sand similar to that in deposit 5190. We have removed most of the top stones to reveal a block possibily connected to or a part of the wall (Wall 5216) that bisects our area along an E-W access. Below this stone, the soil is more compact than the soil removed from around it, and we are therefore reluctant to move it. At this moment, we are leaving it in place. Two other stones had previously fallen out from the top when we excavated context 5190. We think this is a small retaining wall for the backfilled soil of the 1960s excavation. | |
