Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Pit fill deposit 520 is the third from the top fill of a pit west of wall 313 and east of wall 332. The two pit fills above are 519 and 514. The pit cut filled by 520 appears to truncate to the south the fill of an earlier pit. Because the fills above 520 in the pit were truncated by the later pit 513, it is not clear what the original top elevation of the pit filled by 520 would have been, though it is possible that the edge shared by both the pit filled by 520 and the pit cut 510 (a cut down limestone block) was actually produced in the digging of the pit filled by 520. If the limestone block was actually cut by pit cut 527, then the original elevation of the pit would indicate that the pit was cut through the floor that extends between walls 313 and 332 and is associated with them. With the matrix of reddish dirt, the fill 520 includes several roughly hewn limestone blocks and boulders; this may indicate that it the fill above a collapse well. However, we did note that one roughly hewn block showed signs of burning and preserved some burnt wall plaster on its face; this would indicate that the stones were thrown into the pit as means of disposing them.
Later notes, 15 may 2009, SD/JC
At the time of excavation of pit fills 519 and 520 we thought that pit-cut 527 was later and cut into 526 and 528. However, with the excavation of contexts 521, 522 and 524 we realized that pit cut 527 and its fills (509, 519, 520) are actually earlier and cut by pit-cut 528 and 526.
