Description:   The soil color is very dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   5356 is a deposit characterized by the large amount of inclusions, in particular fragments of roof tile and limestone. The deposit, which has a tree stump in its center, appeared either to be dumped on top of a layer of fill within the walls ( 5285 and 61a ), or to be the fill of a pit cut into these same layers. When we recognize this as a pit, we begin to have this context sieved and the tiles collected. While the pit began at a higher level than its surrounding soils, it descends to a lower elevation. Perhaps the pitfill had never been completely covered. The dark soil of the pit extends beneath surrounding stones, which may be part of the surrounding walls. This, however, is not clear.
On the north side of the pit, some large stones are noted beneath a layer of more compact, yellower fill that appears to be about 0.15m in section, though it is not clear that these are part of the same deposit as the pit being excavated as 5356. On the south side, a cut into the layers of fil seems more apparent. The pit seems to be ending on a layer that is darker still, firmer and with far fewer inclusions.
Tile: 171 frg, 69.6 kg.
This pit is modern backfill. After consulting maps from the 1960s excavations, we realize that this is backfill from the 1960s excavations.
