Context Type:   Wall
Title:   N-S and E-W running wall spur to S of Wall 58
Category:   Cut
Notebook:   1101
Context:   5478

Date:   2008/05/13
Stratum:   20% inclusions: pebbles (0.02-0.05 m L), cobbles (0.07-0.10 m L), bioturbation (tree roots, ca. 0.02-0.03 m diameter), pottery, bone (not collected)
Description:   The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt. Structure materials: limestone, conglomerate boulders. Material size: 0.75 m L x 0.64 m W x 0.47 m H (max); cobbles too.. Material finish: varies- rough faced and finished face. Material construction: varies- random coursed and dumped rubble. Material bonding: none.
Notes:   The structures that surround this wall spur were given names at least as early as the 1960s (1963, C. Williams, notebook 253, pp. 10-11, 24-26), but this particular structure does not show up on the plans as we currently understand them. It appears to abut what Williams considered "Wall #1," i.e. what has been labeled "the westernmost N-S wall" to the N of wall 58" by Team Green. Wall 58 has been given the name "Wall #2 by C. Williams; see his 1963 notebook no. 253, p. 26. Much of the wall appeared pedestalled when the plastic was removed from this area at the beginning of the 2008 season. It is comprised of large, roughly-faced and dressed-face boulders (these occur primarily to the W edge of the spur), as well as a series of smaller cobbles and boulders resting on top of a layer of pedestalled fill (to the E edge of the spur, oriented N-S rather than E-W). It is uncertain as to whether the foundations of the structure wer exposed in 1960s excavations, or in 2007 cleaning.
When we ended this context, the large base block furthest to the W remained lodged in the surrounding soil matrix, and was found to go well below the rest of the pedestal of soil. We will not be able to remove it until we expose its base [note, 15.05.08- the stone was removed as part of context 5503, the soil matrix that surrounded and underlay it]. The subfill of this wall will be removed as a separate context. When the masonry associated with the wall will be removed as a separate context. When the masonry associated with the wall was removed, we collected no pottery because the context had been exposed for so long, and was probably subject to considerable contamination. The soil pedestal, however, will be sieved, and finds will be collected. The context number for this fill underlying the wall is 5481.
14.05.08 note: When 5481 was removed, a second level of stones was revealed underneath it. They appeared more strongly E-W in their orientation, much more so than the N-S and E-W cornering form suggested by the overlying large stones. These were drawn at 1:50 and removed as part of context 5497, a fill of a large pit cut (5498) containing loose soil and debris. The decision was made to remove the underlying stones in this way because they were pedestalled by the fill 5497 itself.
In terms of establishing a terminus post quem for the large pit 5498 was found to cut several contexts: 5494, 5499, 5503, and 5500. These contexts serve as terminus post quems for the construction of wall 5478's foundations; the upper stones, which were loose and restong atop the foundations, could still be late, however. G.S. has speculated that it may be an 18th century construction. More on the construction of this wall is covered in context 5481, the fill beneath the first course.
