Description: | Top slope of the context is level down to the S. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is sandy silt. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | This context was excavated as a hard, light fill ostensibly overlying the context exposed at the end of 5580. When the softer top layer was removed, a clear boundary was observed between the looser soil of 5586 and the underlying, harder soil. There are more gradations within the exposed surface as well-- a strip of more hardened soil near the edge of the scarp, and slightly softer, smooth surfacing to the W of the context. Later in the day, J.C. noticed that the tiled layer may also be present on the E side of Wall 71-- a foundation trench may be visible, and this may be the surface which it cuts-- or at least the surface for the wall's construction. This context, from its surface, appeared similar to the hard, light surface bordering immediately to the W. Excavation of that context will reveal whether or not the two can be equated. The soil was removed from beneath the S most visible stone. It was seen to overlie several flat-lying tiles, not unlike those observed earlier in other contexts across the room. The context with the flat-lying tiles does not yet possess a number. The stone was removed as part of this context. When context 5589 was excavated to the E, the hard layer forming a skin on top was removed to reveal the same kind of soil as the soil from this context beneath it. It was excavated as far as the E, SE, and NE sides of the well and reveals the same tile-rich layer-- this time ringing the well, possibly as a well head installation.
